Heads Up For Hats
Sarah McAlister of Sarah McAlister Hats is a milliner and designs and makes bespoke and ready to wear hats and makes everything herself by hand!
With a background of Insolvency Accountant and being a full-time Mum, Sarah knew she had a flair for making things. Looking for a new challenge she found a six-week part time Millinery course at Kensington and Chelsea College in Fulham. Sarah loved the course and had a natural talent for it. She ended up staying on the course for two years and then decided to start her own business.
Shortly after starting the business she attended several free workshops. Sarah said, “Trying to start a home-based business has been quite an isolating experience, having been previously used to working in busy offices. Merton Chamber and MCC Business Solutions workshops and networking events have provided me with positive feedback and encouragement so that I have felt able to enter awards/competitions. So far I have been a semi-finalist in the Hat Designer of the Year competition 2009 and a finalist in the Merton Business Awards for Customer Service in 2010.”
