Go Green - Case Study - Craftwork - Wandsworth

hundreds of pounds saved through recycling scheme

COMPANY:
Craftwork International, Wandsworth

BACKGROUND:
Craftwork International is an interior design/ refurbishment business mainly for commercial properties.
It has three members of staff and had been chatting amongst themselves on what they could easily do before they met with the Go Green Plus adviser.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
The company started a recycling scheme in its small office in September 2009, separating out paper and other waste for different collections. To dispose of its waste previously cost £268.72 for the year, comprising of £148.72 for bags and £120 for Duty of Care. Since introducing the recycling scheme these costs have decreased significantly to £43.68, providing an annual saving of £225.04. In addition staff think twice about printing out documents and a printer with a double-sided capacity was bought. Both of these actions help to reduce the amount of paper used.

Various low voltage and more efficient lighting was introduced into the office area, alongside timer switches, and radiators had special heat reflecting materials to improve energy efficiency. Implementing these measures will have a positive impact on the charges on the company’s utility bills long term.
“It’s all about introducing discipline,” says managing director and owner Chris Wyatt, “You remember to turn things off, we turned down the heating and put on an extra layer of clothing. It’s easy to put on appliances and forget about them. We’re trying to change that and ensure equipment that has been switched on does actually need to be and is used.”

He recommends other businesses to work with Go Green Plus advisers and follow suit. “If everyone does their bit and make improvements where they can it will make all the difference,” he says.

Go Green is supported by the London Development Agency and in partnership with five major London Boroughs covering the South and South West of London and can be contacted as follows
